Hreflang tags for international Shopify stores
Publishes one correct set of hreflang tags across every store you own, clears the tags that conflict with it, and verifies the result on your live pages. No URL-by-URL mapping.

Everything international SEO demands
Built from the ground up for Shopify merchants who sell in multiple languages and regions.
Links stores Shopify cannot
Shopify generates hreflang inside a single store, from that store's Markets settings. Shopify's own documentation says Markets cannot coordinate alternate versions of a page across separate Shopify stores. Unwrite does exactly that: every store in your workspace becomes one reciprocal set of alternates, so your US, UK and EU storefronts reference each other correctly.
Removes the tags that conflict
Most stores already emit hreflang from somewhere: Shopify Markets, a translation app, or hardcoded theme code. Unwrite finds every source, clears the ones that conflict, and leaves exactly one correct set. Publishing needs no theme edits at all. Clearing conflicts changes a single marker-commented line that you can remove in 30 seconds, with or without the app installed.
Languages set up automatically
Unwrite reads each store's Shopify Markets configuration and proposes the primary language for every region plus the secondary languages worth targeting, each with a confidence rating. Review the handful that need changing instead of setting hundreds of dropdowns one at a time.
Automatic URL mapping
Products are matched across stores by SKU, barcode or URL handle, with fallbacks for when your primary key does not line up. Collections, pages, blogs, articles and metaobjects match on handle. Conflicts and broken matches surface in a fix queue instead of failing silently.
Verified on your live pages
Unwrite fetches your storefront and reads the hreflang actually rendered in the HTML, not just what it believes it published. It reruns every night, so a changed SKU, a reused handle, or a deleted resource is caught and corrected before Google's next crawl.
Health score
A single metric for the state of your hreflang across every connected store, with the specific resources that need attention listed underneath it.
Team access without Shopify admin
Invite SEO managers, external consultants, or colleagues by email. They get their own login with role-based permissions (owner, admin, editor, viewer). No need to share Shopify admin access or create staff accounts on every store.
One subscription, all your stores
The host store pays one subscription. Every other store in the workspace joins free via a one-time join code. No per-store fees that punish growth: your plan tier is the only thing that scales.
Works with complex market setups
One store covering all of Europe with Shopify Markets, alongside single-region stores for the US, Australia, and Canada? All in the same workspace. The app reads each store's Markets configuration and builds the right hreflang structure automatically.
Why Shopify does not solve this on its own
Shopify Markets handles hreflang within a single store, but falls short when you run separate stores for different countries.
Single-store only
Shopify Markets generates hreflang tags within one store. It cannot link separate stores across countries or regions.
Duplicate content risk
When two stores share the same language, Google may treat them as duplicates and suppress one from search results.
Switching it off is all or nothing
Shopify added a setting to disable automatic hreflang in July 2026. Turning it off removes every tag it emitted, including the ones you needed, and does nothing about tags coming from translation apps or your theme.
Catches problems before Google does
Products get deleted. SKUs change. Handles get reused. Any of these silently break your hreflang tags.
Nightly audits
Published tags are compared against your actual Shopify data every night.
Automatic fixes
Corrected tags are republished before Google's next crawl. No manual intervention needed.
Smart notifications
You only hear from us when something genuinely needs your attention.
